Where to find Byron

Moves as their questline advances — 6 quest steps across 5 places, in this order:

Questline — The Missing Pendant

A gravedigger who tends the vestiges you light. He was a Hallowed Sentinel, and so was his lover Catrin; the order executed them both for it. His questline and Winterberry's are one questline.

Run-ending mistakes

  • Ride the Skinstealer elevator into Upper Calrath before vouching for Winterberry and Byron murders her. Her camp holds a bloody backpack and nothing else. Because she is the vendor for his armour, that costs you the entire set.

The route

  1. Pilgrim's Perch, Bellroom
    He notices your lamp and offers to look after any vestige you light. Exhaust it.
  2. Forsaken Fen, Vestige of Valade — after: Light that vestige
    He gives his name and airs his distrust of the Sentinels and the Rhogar.
  3. Sunless Skein, Vestige of Catrin
    Catrin died here and somebody took her pendant. He asks you to find it. You get the Bemoaning Gesture.
  4. Sunless Skein
    Find Winterberry. On patch 1.6.49 or later: from the Vestige of Catrin, vestige at your back, turn left, cross the shortcut bridge, follow the tunnel to its end — she is in an alcove above you.
  5. Winterberry's alcove
    Talk to her. She has the pendant and will not sell it. You get the Celebration Gesture.
  6. Vestige of Catrin
    Go back to Byron and pick the option that tells him she is not a monster. This step is the entire quest. Do it before anything else.
  7. Sunless Skein — after: Ride the Skinstealer elevator to Upper Calrath
    Only now. That ride relocates both of them to Skyrest Bridge.
  8. Skyrest crypt, bottom of the spiral stair
    He will protect her and let her keep the pendant. You get the Umbral Eye of Ethryg. Rest at a vestige and Winterberry's shop expands with his gear.

What you get

Worth knowing

  • Costly: On the failed branch you get one last choice. Telling him the truth makes him leave the realm, abandoning his Shovel and Catrin's Pendant on the precipice at the Manse of the Hallowed Brothers.
  • Correct order: kill the Skinstealer, find Winterberry, report back to Byron, then take the elevator.

Once, Byron had never doubted his faith in the Hallowed Sentinels, but then he had never doubted his love for Catrin either, and ultimately if one had to be proven a sham then he was glad it was the former.

The game reveals this in play at high Radiance or Inferno.
